The 10th House of Representatives is aware of the poor state of the health sector, which was further worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic We are committed to reforming healthcare to adequately cater to Nigerians’ needs and respond better to emergencies like pandemics Accordingly, the House will pursue the following objectives:

Healthcare
  1. Allocate a higher percentage of the national budget to the health sector, aligning with the Abuja Declaration, which recommends that at least 15% of the national budget be allocated to health
  2. Amend the National Health Act to increase funding for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) from 1% to at least 2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to tackle prevalent deficiencies in healthcare resources and infrastructure
  3. Allocate funds and encourage research in tropical diseases, traditional medicine, vaccine development, innovative treatment modalities and other areas relevant to Nigeria’s health challenges
  4. Focus on improving access to primary healthcare services, especially in rural and underserved areas
  5. Ensure a universal health insurance system to ensure all citizens have access to affordable healthcare and expand the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to achieve nationwide coverage of a broader range of services and ensure efficient operation.
  6. Promote legislation to facilitate the adoption and integration of new healthcare technology such as electronic health records, telemedicine, and remote patient monitoring
  7. Legislative action will be taken to improve the recruitment, training and retention of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses and other allied healthcare workers
  8. Strengthen the regulatory bodies overseeing the health sector to ensure adherence to global best practices
  9. Revisit laws related to public health concerns such as sanitation, vaccination, and disease control, especially the Quarantine Act of 1926
  10. Introduce measures to ensure universal access to healthcare and nutrition services, including sexual and reproductive health, as well as medical and psychosocial care for survivors of sexual and gender- based violence and harmful practices
